Plasma cutting technology has brought a lot of changes to the HVAC industry. HVAC fabrication is a significantly simpler, faster art now, and more than 90% of HVAC companies use plasma technology in their operations thanks to the convenience, rapid production speeds, and significant reduction in labour it provides.
Skilled, manual sheet metal works are a dying art simply because the process of using templates, drawing out parts by hand, and cutting the sheet metal part by hand can’t compete with automated plasma processes. However, not all plasma cutting machines are created equal – there are a few key features you should look for, whether you’re a first-time buyer or upgrading from an existing one.
A high-quality plasma cutting machine always cuts at the same rate, to the same quality, and this is extremely valuable in an industry where most cutting is done the day before the part is actually needed. The last thing you want is for a next-day order to come through only for you to find out your machine has developed a fault that prevents it from cutting. For all the engineering that goes into their creation, good plasma cutting machines are hard-wearing pieces of equipment, so with proper maintenance they can be trusted to work exactly when required.
CAD/CAM software such as CAMduct provide a user-friendly, powerful design and cutting management tool. Thanks to its HVAC-specialised capabilities and automatic part organisation it produces significantly less scrap than older methods such as guillotining. High quality cutting software also means it is easy to create new shapes or add holes to existing designs without the need for the user to do any complex calculations.
Some pieces of sheet metal used for HVAC applications come with a Plastisol protective coating, preventing conventional plasma cutting. Good plasma cutting machines come with a marker attachment that can be used to perform the same part pattern as usual, marking out the components so that they can be cut manually.
